Tight at the top

Sleat & Strath were saved their blushes again last week in their 4 - 2 defeat to Portree Juniors, as Gairloch/Aultbea United grabbed a late equaliser at home to Kyleakin meaning that the point deficit was only extended by 1.

An understrength Sleat & Strath had gone 3-0 down to Portree Juniors in the opening 30 minutes before getting into gear, Calum Mattinson getting one back for the hosts just before half time. He scored again 10 minutes into the second half as Sleat & Strath came out strong, but with 20 minutes left, Juniors would score again to take the 4 - 2 win, the same result as they had over Kyleakin just 2 weeks previously, setting themselves up for a late title charge as they sit in 3rd, only 3 points behind Sleat & Strath.

There was a full card of mid week fixtures this week. Sleat & Strath played host to Kyle, who themselves were on good form after beating Portree 4 - 1 in their last match. Although Sleat & Strath were back to full strength, it was a tight first half as Kyle played well. But Sleat & Strath came out firing in the second half and it was Calum Mattinson, who is having a sensational end to the season, who got the scoring under way 4 minutes after the break. Gordy MacCarrol also had a fine second half picking up 2 goals, along with Scott MacKinnon, who's second was the goal of the match. He picked the ball up 35 yards out and " ...spotted the keeper of his line [and] just let fly." Jamie Graham finished off the scoring with another fine goal as he ran down wing and fired in from a tight angle over the keeper and into the top corner.

In the other games at the top, Kyleakin beat Portree 6 - 1, while Portree Juniors sailed past Staffin 12 - 1 on Wednesday.

If Sleat & Strath can keep up this level of football then it will take a very good team to beat them, and with only 3 fixtures left, it is increasingly likely that the league will be decided on the final day. However, they will have to do it without the help of top scorer McCarroll who is suspended for the final 2 league games of the season.
