Sleat & Strath concede first goals and first defeat of the season

posted 28 Apr 2013, 12:39 by Ben MacKinnon

Sleat and Strath hosted Portree on Friday night. The two teams were tied for points at the top of the table before the game, so it was an early opportunity for one team to pull away.

A decent crowd had gathered to watch the match, despite the weather. It was another miserable night with a strong wind and driving rain, and that lead to a game of two halves. Portree played the first half with the wind at their backs, and were able to dominate from playing long balls up to their lone striker. With five midfielders, they were able to put a stop to Sleat & Straths usual creativeness through the middle.

Portree took an early lead only 5 minutes into the game. Stephen Cormack was given time on the ball and from around 20 yards out fired into bottom corner. Sleat & Strath weren't able to learn from their mistake and after 20 mins, this time from 25 yards out, Stephen Cormacks shot took a slight deflection and again found its way into the net. Sleat & Strath just weren't able to get going with the wind in their faces.

The second half was a different story as not only had the Sleat & Strath boys been given a stern team talk by their manager, they also now had the wind on their backs. They put on a lot of pressure on with wave are wave of attack, winning corners and threatening free kicks. But shot after shot went high, wide or was well saved by the Portree goalkeeper. With 10 minutes left to play, after a lengthy spell of pressure and several corners, one of them finally payed off. The ball coming off Portrees Kenny Campbell for a score of 2-1. Sleat & Strath threw everything they had left at Portree in the final minutes, even hitting the bar at one point. But Portree defended well and were able to hold out for win.
