Season gets underway

Sleat & Strath AFC will travel to Gairloch on Saturday to get the SLAFA Co-operative League season underway in an early kick off.

Preseason is complete and the squad is raring to go. There have been welcome additions in Ian MacGillivray, Daniel Selfridge and Beñat Muguruza (aka. Benny the Bask). Also returning to the team this year are Ben Yoxon and Jamie Hamilton, back from their international travels.

The extra depth in the squad allowed manager DL MacKinnon to play around with a few options in preseason, which didn't lead to spectacular results early on. Tactics were a bit more settled for the final preseason match in Mallaig, where the team won 5 - 3, even without the regular back three of Martin MacKinnon, Sandy MacAskill and Iain MacPherson making the trip.

The squads main aim this season will be to win the league trophy back from Kyleakin, who stopped Sleat & Strath winning it for a 3rd time in a row last season in a dramatic final game between the two clubs. Beyond that they will be hoping to go far in the Highland Amatuer Cup in which they host Dornoch in the first round, and will travel to either Lairg or Wick for the second round should they progress. With a more complete squad this year compared to last, the manager will be able to utilise it's depth in preparing for the big fixtures.
